Cinque Terre

Manarola, Cinque Terre, Italy
|
| |
Cinque Terre (which means "five lands," more or less)
is an area on the northern Mediterranean coast of Italy that encompasses five
old fishing villages. The land surrounding the towns is now a national park
and has become a favorite tourist destination. Despite the loss of touristic
innocence, Cinque Terre is a must-see spot.
A trail links the villages, and though it's entirely possible
to visit all five in one day, you can also do any portion of the trail, then
return to your hotel by train and use the train to pick up your journey another
day.

Taking the traii affords opportunities for majestic vistas of
the Mediterranean coast, olive groves, and vineyards. Temperatures can be high
during summer afternoons, which makes arriving at the destination village all
the more appreciated.
In addition to delightful local wines, the food is beyond good.
I'd never had pesto before visiting Cinque Terre, and what a wonderful suprise
it was! Pesto is a Ligurian specialty, and they definitely have it down.
Go there. Don't put it off.
